Adrenaline May Mask Your Injuries and Pain After a Car Accident

December 13, 2017

If you have ever been involved in a car accident, you will agree that it is undoubtedly one of the most unpleasant experiences ever. Aside from the fact that it is extremely stressful, frightening, and shocking, you may also wonder whether you or anyone else is injured, or whether you should call the police. In addition to this uncertainty and the state of shock, you also need to thoroughly check yourself for any signs of bodily injuries. However, due to a sudden influx of Adrenaline into your bloodstream you may quickly conclude that you are not injured, though you may actually be. At the very minimum you may have suffered soft tissue damage, concussions, whiplash, and possibly spinal cord injuries. That is why it is extremely important to get examined by a trained professional immediately following the accident.

Your injuries may not surface right after the accident, because Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, raises your heart rate, dilates your pupils, increases sweat production, and may also block the sensation of pain. This pain blocking phenomenon is a defense mechanism that is also known as “fight or flight.” In essence, your body enters a state of stress-induced analgesia to alleviate the shock of the accident and reduce the sensation of pain. As a result, by thinking that you are not injured, when in fact you are, you can cause additional damages.

Moreover, in North Carolina, timely and proper medical examination will benefit you in several ways. First, it will be much easier to justify the validity of your injuries to Insurance companies, as you sought treatment immediately following the accident. Second, it will ensure that any masked injuries are uncovered, and you receive adequate treatment that will hopefully place you in as good a condition as you were prior to the accident.
